Bush: “Everything Zen” (1994)

The debut single from their debut album Sixteen Stone (1994). New York City’s K-Rock pushed it through and at first listen I didn’t feel for it. But after a few more spins I, like everyone else, took note of Gavin Rossdale’s abstract lyrics of UK youth culture and our pause of thought was long enough to roll out their other singles as they came. “Glycerine” and “Machinehead” were later released and next thing I knew most of my alternative circle of friends were into them and Sixteen Stone became past or our lives. Bush fit in with all the current goings-on in alternative rock and scored six-times-platinum for their debut leading up to Razorblade Suitcase (1997) when every female had a thirst for Rossdale for a year or two.

“Everything Zen”, along with other Sixteen Stone singles “Everything Zen” and “Machinehead” share the same non-album track “Bud”, a nice little treat for those still infatuated with CD and cassette singles.

Bush – Sixteen Stone

The 6x Platinum debut by English rock band, Bush, is getting a comprehensive vinyl reissue today in honor of Sixteen Stone’s 30th anniversary. You probably know the hits by heart. “Everything Zen,” “Little Things,” “Comedown,” “Machinehead” and “Glycerine” were the five massive singles released from this album that still stand the test of time today. The album was recorded at Westside Studios, London with producers Clive Langer and Alan Winstanley, and marked the breakthrough of legendary Alt Rock frontman, Gavin Rossdale. Through his gritty vocal performance throughout Sixteen Stone, Rossdale captivated audiences far and wide on this record that if you didn’t own it yourself, you likely knew someone nearby who did. Bush had recently celebrated the 30th anniversary of Sixteen Stone with a comprehensive Greatest Hits tour that coincided with a singles compilation and put their decades-long career back into focus. The stylistic choices found on Sixteen Stone ranged from grunge to post-rock, all paired with the pop sensibilities for sustained success on Alt Rock radio. The set kicks off with the energetic guitar blast found on lead single, “Everything Zen,” and the band showcases the depths of their sound on remarkable deep cuts like “Swim” and the Nirvana-esque “Bomb.” The machine gun drumming by Robin Goodridge on “Little Things” accentuated Bush’s approach to rounding out their hard rock sound, while “Comedown” was a well-constructed ballad that featured a great bass line paired with vulnerable vocals from Rossdale. The record has plenty of legs with songs like “Body,” that felt like a blend between the grunge of Soundgarden mixed with the metal-tinged elements of Iron Maiden and Motorhead. “Machinehead” featured a great, opening guitar riff from Rossdale and Nigel Pulsford that sets the table brilliantly for the energetic vocal performance throughout. “Testosterone” felt like a band trying to find their footing with other similar bands like Alice In Chains and Soundgarden blowing up the charts, while “Monkey” showed off a more experimental side of Bush. The closing trio of an all-time ballad in “Glycerine,” paired with the sprawling “Alien,” and quiet closing track of “X-girlfriend” proved that Bush were far from a one-trick pony. The band would follow up this record with a harder-tinged effort in Razorblade Suitcase and find sustained success over their 30-plus year career. The gatefold, double LP set is sure to be treasured for longtime fans of the band while still leaving opportunities for music fans to re-discover this gem. So it's supposed to start with Tool's Ænima, but I'm thinking of saving Tool for a Metal Monday post.

So let's go to Xzibit with Paparazzi which samples Barbra Streisand's version of Gabriel Faure's ethereal Pavane.

We had Shawn Colvin's Grammy-winning Sunny Came Home.

Matchbox 20 had a big hit with the dubious Push.

Then came one of the standout songs of the year with what was definitely the most striking music video of the year. It was Marilyn Manson with The Beautiful People, directed by Floria Sigismondi. The aesthetics just blew me away. I'm still not sure what grabbed me more, the song or the video. (It should have been a Metal Monday but I couldn't resist.) DP Chris Soos won the Canadian Society of Cinematographers award for best music video, and it's clear why.

Then came Paula Cole with this chronicle of a tragic romance.

(Another single, I Don't Want to Wait, became huge as the second opening theme of the hit teen series, Dawson's Creek.)

The Spice Girls exploded with their debut, Spice, and the single, Wannabe. (I was not into it.)

Tricky's Pre-Millennium Tension would spawn a beautiful video, but only later, in 1997.

Bush's Razorblade Suitcase featured the darker Greedy Fly (directed by Marcus Nispel)

Enigma had a minor hit with Beyond the Invisible, directed by Julien Temple. (Wikipedia says the ice rink was built especially for the video and took a week to freeze. Music videos used to have money.)

And that's it for what Wikipedia lists as albums released in 1996, but there's still more to come.

and what is more my suitcase contains all my summer wardrobe and i work in a basement with no windows or ventilation and england is now having a heatwave and i also just went out to emergency buy toiletries and got razor blades and surprise guess what is ALSO inside my suitcase MIA over marinas trench right now (my actual razorblade handle) so i had to shave holding just the razorhead which has cut my epidermis into fucking christmas ribbons . what if i died what if we all died

missed my flight (my own fat L) and had to pay €600+ for a new one that took about 10 hours longer and my suitcase is lost in germany (??) and got falsely charged nearly 200 quid for airport parking and my boss has sent an all staff email saying we cant have our xmas leave off bc we’ll be understaffed and has said the people highlighted in blue will be first to be made to work it if no one volunteers. guess who is the only person out of 50+ highlighted blue. :)
